Scope of Foam Discharge Devices Used for Fire Protection of Retention Basins for Flammable Liquid Tanks (2003/02)

When considering the use of foam spill containment barriers to protect the retention basins of flammable liquid storage tanks, a question arises:

– From each installed discharge point, what is the maximum distance traveled by the foam discharged onto a burning basin?

Following numerous tests, particularly those conducted to determine the appropriate foam application rates for controlling and extinguishing unleaded fuel fires, it has been generally accepted to date that when spillways are used to protect a basin, the foam spread distance from a spillway is limited to 20 meters. This raises the question: is it possible to go beyond this limit?
